Modern Educational System

Education is an important tool which is very useful in everybody’s life. It is what differentiates us from other living beings on earth. It makes man the smartest creature on earth. It empowers humans and gets them ready to face challenges of life efficiently.

Education plays a key role in the development of human civilization. Since the ancient days, the method of learning is constantly evolving with time and is still going through numerous changes owing to the advancing technologies. All of us are quite acquainted with the traditional ways of learning where education is imparted within the walls of the classroom to a group of students. However, with the intervention of internet and digital technology, the online platform is currently in trend taking the place of brick and mortar classrooms & benefitting a wide range of students at the same time across the globe. The modern educational system has completely eradicated the space limitation of a physical classroom by encouraging more student participation from every nook and corner of the world, by benefiting the students abundantly making it more preferable by the students.

As both are important form of Education let us draw parallel comparison between them.

Traditional Education System

Traditional learning holds the use of conventional learning tools comprising of blackboards, chalks, books and pens. It is confined within the walls of classrooms & students are gathered under a roof at a specific time and specific place where students acquire education from teachers present in the classroom and get direct assistance from them in the time of inconvenience or doubts regarding the subject. The knowledge attained by the learner depends on the knowledge of the instructor. Students are enrolled to the institution for a specific term or period, they attend classes every day.  This type of education is still followed by a huge number of educational institutions, the customary learning through classrooms has its own perk and worth such as:

1.  Social Exposure: Students are getting exposed to a group of new students from different places across the world which will always be fun and relaxing. It will not only increase the sharing of knowledge but will encourage the students to learn more. It will also help them in in character building and to learn to share and respect others.

2.  Proper Guidance: The presence of a subject teacher is very beneficial as the doubts which arise in mid-lecture can be solved then and there. It will also promote more students – teacher interactions which will add on to the learning capabilities of students.

3.   Punctuality: The students will have a specific time for every period and time for taking a break. This timing is all planed at the beginning, which will further help the students to follow there routine and make them punctual and disciplined.

4.  The feeling of sociability and solidarity: Traditional education sometimes makes the student feel less lonely. The student might feel like they are not facing academic challenges alone and can even build more confidence.

5.    Ability to work in groups: Traditional education, in general, allows for group projects and student interaction. As a result, they can learn from each other and share doubts and concerns. These social ties can help to come up with new ideas and stimulate creativity.

Disadvantages of the Traditional Education

1. Generalized learning: Generalized education for all the students make it difficult for them to learn things they are interested in. Different students have different talents and interests which this general education fails to provide. Students will be spending more time and effort to study in which they are not good at, and this will not help them in their future career.

2. Passive listeners: In traditional education, students should listen to their teachers. Sometimes the students do not make an effort to listen to the teachers. They lack interest in the lectures and become passive listeners

3. No flexible time: The traditional education follows a rigid schedule which is challenging to study. The students have difficulties to cope up with it as there’s no flexibility to create a personal calendar in order to combine studies and personal or work life.

4.  Expensive: It is very expensive as the school provides certain facilities and for the tuition fee for their instructors etc. Everyone cannot afford it and end up taking loans.

5. Teacher-centered learning: Teacher and books are the main sources of information. The students are unable to learn new things, and their knowledge is restricted to the knowledge provided by the books and lecturers.

6. Less and more expensive didactic material available: traditional education is more limited when it comes to educational formats. Sometimes pictures, videos or forums aren’t accessible 24/7. This feature might limit the learning and hinder a good study plan.

Modern Education System

Learning through different websites by the use of internet has arrived as the recent learning techniques. Overcoming the adversities associated with primitive teaching methodologies, modern education is imparting knowledge more effectively and more impeccably. Delivering knowledge through online platforms or websites, it has been able to attract a variety of not only students but also teachers to participate in technology-driven learning. Not constraining the deliverance to any kind of time limits or the number of students, the popularity and preferences of online teaching day by day. Still under constant modification to ensure the quality of education, online learning holds a range of benefits such as:

1.  Flexibility: Distance education allows access to classes whenever and wherever you want. The schedule is flexible so the student can create a personal study plan with their needs in mind. There’s no need to give up anything because of a lack of time. Due to the flexible timings ensured by online teaching without the limitation of a particular time period, even the professionals and part-time learners can get benefitted from it.

2.  Time and cost effective: in traditional education, the student must be present in the classroom for every lesson. So they need to commute from one place to the other and that is time and cost consuming. Here, these expenses disappear and there’s no need to waste resources. Students are relived from tuition fees, admission costs, and other basic amenities associated with primitive learning system, and so this learning is gaining recognition due to its effective lower cost.

3.  Commodity: there’s no need to commute in vain.  The student can create a cozy place in their homes to concentrate. There’s no need for a classroom anymore. It’s in our hands to recreate the appropriate atmosphere to study in peace and without distractions.

4.  Customized learning experience: Most of the time, the lessons are taught to students in small groups and on an individual level. This method is becoming more and more popular every day as it allows the teacher to get to know the virtues and faults of their students and make the most out of the classes. This is a way for the students to set their learning pace and find a space to interact openly and freely with the tutor.

5.     A wide selection of courses: online learning platforms offer a wide and diverse number of courses. From university to high school, there's a course for everyone. Students can even get a degree without stepping foot on a university campus. Online education also counts with very diverse and useful methodologies to meet the needs of every kind of student. It also allows the advantage of choosing more than one course as per the interest of the learner.

6.  Access to didactic material from anyplace anytime: the didactic resources of the lessons are available from whenever and wherever you want. The digital format allows access to them whenever its necessary.

Disadvantages of Modern Education

1.  A need for compromise, motivation, and self-discipline: There are students that without a predetermined structure have a hard time finding time to study. Self-discipline can be taught, but some students already possess it naturally. Online study demands a compromise with the tasks.

2.    A need for technological equipment and a good internet connection: It’s not enough to have a notebook and a pencil case at your disposal. The equipment you need is a computer with a webcam, headphones (optimal) and, a good internet connection. If you don't have one of these, you will have to acquire it.

3.  Hard to use in some academic fields: Not all disciplines can be taught online. A few subjects, mostly the ones that require practice and practicals, are better in person. However, there’s a way to combine both to achieve an optimal result.

4.   More stimuli capable of distractions: This can happen if the chosen place to study is not adequate. The education is in the hands of the student and as a result, it’s vitally important to have a proper space far from any potential distraction. The virtual environment is not enough to maintain the full concentration of the student.

5.    Lack of social interaction: Online learning courses are self-paced courses. It makes the learners difficult to develop a relationship with their peers. Limited social interaction and no face to face interaction.

6.  The chance to get distracted: The learners who are less determined and lacks self-motivation the chance of them to get detracted is very high. The learners lose track of their studies and end up doing something else.

7.    Learners get isolated: The learners don’t have any interaction with the outside world, this makes a high chance to make a learner feel lonely and isolated.

Comparison between the Modern Education System and the Traditional Education System

1.   In modern education system, the learners are able to learn in flexible timings, whereas in traditional education there is a fixed timing.

2.   The learners in online education are a heterogeneous group of people with different age, different nationality, different professions, etc. Whereas in the traditional education learners are a homogeneous group of people of the same age group.

3.    Traditional education is costly, the course books, tuition fees, the classroom setup, etc. sum up to a huge amount of money compared to online education. The modern education system doesn’t require any classroom setup, course books, etc. hence it is comparatively low cost.

4.    The online learners are able to learn courses that are offered by different universities at the same time. Traditional education holds the learners back as they are only able to learn a single course at a time. To learn courses from abroad universities in traditional education is very difficult. Hence an online learner is able to get certificates of different courses in a short period of time whereas in traditional it takes much more time.

5.     In traditional education, the exams are conducted after a period of time, say a term or semester. The courses are manually evaluated. Whereas in a modern education test is conducted after each topic with automated evaluation.

6.  Online learning provides with an unlimited source of learning material whereas in a traditional the learning sources are limited.

To sum up both the education system has pros and cons. According to the current situation, the modern education system is better than the traditional education system.

As users are more engaged and able to get better results in modern education. Most learners prefer modern education or online learning. The eLearning industry is growing rapidly. Many companies opt for custom eLearning portal for the best-tailored eLearning platform which is the best fit for them.
